ANDREW THOMSON FROM PRESTWICK SENTENCED FOR RAPE AND ASSAULT IN GLASGOW
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Prestwick and the wider South Ayrshire region, Andrew Thomson, a 38-year-old man, was found guilty of multiple serious criminal charges at the High Court in Glasgow. The court heard harrowing details of his violent and predatory behavior towards two women, one aged 22 and the other just 16, over a period spanning from June 2013 to August 2015.Thomson’s actions included the brutal assault of the 22-year-old woman, during which he slapped and punched her repeatedly, culminating in a head-butt that rendered her unconscious. The court was also informed that he administered Diazepam to her without her knowledge, a drug that could have had dangerous effects. His assault did not stop there; he also caused damage to her mobile phone and exerted control over her personal life by deciding what clothes she should wear, who she could socialize with, and who she could contact via social media platforms.
In addition to these violent acts, Thomson was convicted of watching the 16-year-old girl while she was showering and making inappropriate sexual remarks towards her. The court heard that Thomson repeatedly raped the older woman at various addresses in Prestwick, South Ayrshire, during the two-year period. His behavior towards women was described as deeply troubling, with the judge, Bill Dunlop QC, expressing his disgust. Addressing the jury, Judge Dunlop stated, “Frankly he makes me ashamed to be a Scotsman. He will be going to prison for a long time, depending on background reports.”
Thomson’s criminal record is extensive, with numerous convictions for drug offenses, assault causing injury, and a previous conviction for underage sex involving a girl aged between 14 and 16. The victims recounted how Thomson, despite their clear refusals, refused to listen and continued to pursue sexual contact with them. His behavior was characterized by a pattern of violence and coercion, which the court described as deeply disturbing.
Prosecutor Allan Nicole highlighted Thomson’s criminal history, emphasizing his 22 separate convictions for drugs and assault-related offenses. The court also heard that Thomson’s actions caused significant trauma to his victims, who had to endure his relentless and invasive conduct.
Thomson denied all charges during the trial, maintaining his innocence. However, after deliberation, the jury found him guilty on all counts. The judge ordered Thomson to be placed on the sex offenders’ register and remanded him in custody pending sentencing, which is scheduled for next month. His defense advocate, Victoria Dow, is expected to present her plea in mitigation at that time, but the court’s view of Thomson’s actions remains unequivocally condemnatory.
