DRUNK MAN SMASHES UP MILK AND ATTACKS FAMILY IN LOCKWOOD

A man attacked his father and brother in a drunken row after bingeing on alcohol for days.

Andrew Pogson smashed up milk bottles before grabbing his dad by the throat and punching his sibling in the face.

The 45-year-old turned to drink as he struggled to cope with the death of his mother and his wife leaving him.

He appeared at Kirklees Magistrates' Court from custody and pleaded guilty to two charges of assault by beating and criminal damage.

The attacks happened shortly before 3am on December 26.

Pogson attended at his family's home address in Meltham Road, Lockwood, and his father allowed him to stay and have some food.

But he became angry and smashed some milk bottles against the wall in the house.

Things then settled down with all three men drinking alcohol together but Pogson soon lost his temper again.

Toni McCann, prosecuting, said: “He assaulted his father by grabbing him around the throat.

“He was asking for some music to be turned down and argued with his brother, causing damage to his brother's bedroom door by smashing the glass pane and the lower wooden pane to force his way into the room where he was.

“Then he punched him in the face and head, causing bleeding to his nose.” Police attended but were unable to take statements straight away due to the intoxicated state of the men, the Huddersfield court was told.

Pogson has been in custody since December when a suspended term of imprisonment for an earlier assault was activated due to the new offences.

Magistrates were told that he lost his mum two years ago and also facing his first Christmas without his children.

He found this extremely difficult and began excessively binge drinking in the days leading up to the incident.

Magistrates sentenced Pogson to a community order with 33 days of rehabilitation activities and 150 hours of unpaid work.

He is also required to pay victims £200 in compensation and £50 in court costs.
