2007: A 20-year-old man, Andrew Mellor, has been sentenced to life in prison after orchestrating a violent assault on his ex-girlfriend, leaving her unconscious.
Mellor's assault occurred when the victim, 19 years old, arrived at his residence to retrieve money he owed her.
He initially threatened her with a two-foot-long Samurai sword, then punched her to the ground.
Using a claw hammer, Mellor struck her multiple times on the head before stabbing her in the stomach.
Subsequently, he went to a police station and confessed to attempting her murder.
Emergency responders discovered the woman bloodied and trembling at Mellor's home on Parkhills Road, Bury, on July 2.
She sustained a fractured skull and a stomach stab wound.
During Manchester Crown Court proceedings on Monday, Mellor admitted to attempted murder and was told he must serve a minimum of seven and a half years before becoming eligible for parole.
Detective Sergeant Darren Collins remarked that the attack was deliberate and frenzied, with the potential to be fatal for the young woman.
