2008: ALCOHOLIC DOG OWNER IS JAILED FOR 16 WEEKS
A man from Dudley, Andrew Glazzard, aged 41, received a 16-week jail term after he deliberately caused harm to his dog, Maisie, by placing her inside a washing machine as a form of punishment.Glazzard also pleaded guilty to possessing a small amount of cannabis resin.
During the hearing at Halesowen Magistrates, it was revealed that between November 20 and 27, Glazzard found his dog had soiled inside his home.
Prosecutor Mr.
Mark Cooper explained that Glazzard attempted to discipline Maisie by putting her in the washing machine and turning it on briefly.
Upon removing her, the dog was still wagging her tail; however, he then reinserted her and eventually fell asleep.
When he awoke, Maisie had died.
Her body was later discarded in the River Stour after he placed her in a bag and took her to the Bonded Warehouse in Stourbridge — but the dog’s remains were never recovered.
Evidence presented to the court indicated the dog endured significant suffering, with bite marks found on the washing machine’s drum and signs of stress.
Legal representative Miss Amanda Hahn highlighted Glazzard’s emotional turmoil, stating he was extremely distressed and remorseful after confessing to the police.
She added that he felt overwhelming guilt since the incident.
It was also disclosed that Glazzard was battling alcohol issues, consuming a minimum of three liters of cider every day.
Witnesses described Maisie as a well-behaved dog that Glazzard loved dearly.
Magistrates’ chairman Owen Jones described the act as heinous and terrible, especially noting that the dog had been placed inside the washing machine on two occasions, subjected to extreme terror.
Proceeding with the sentence, Glazzard was ordered to serve 16 weeks in prison and was barred from owning animals for a period of five years.
