ANDREW COWIE BEVERLEY SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED TO FOUR YEARS IN JAIL FOR CHILD ABUSE
In a case that has shocked the community of Beverley, Andrew Cowie, a 63-year-old former fire officer and paramedic, has been sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of multiple charges related to the sexual abuse of children. The conviction follows a lengthy trial at Hull Crown Court, where the details of Cowie’s disturbing past were laid bare for the court and the public to hear.Andrew Cowie, who resided on Victoria Road in Beverley, was once celebrated for his heroic acts, including saving a child from a road accident and rescuing a pensioner from a fire. His community regarded him as a local hero, and he was known for his involvement in rugby and his service in emergency response roles. However, beneath this facade of heroism lay a dark secret that spanned over three decades.
It was revealed during the trial that Cowie had committed heinous acts against two children approximately 35 years ago. One girl was sexually violated, and a boy was subjected to relentless physical abuse. Cowie had threatened both victims with harm if they ever disclosed what had happened, effectively silencing them through fear and intimidation. The court heard that Cowie’s actions had left deep psychological scars on the victims, scars that would last a lifetime.
Judge Mark Bury, presiding over the case, emphasized the severity of Cowie’s crimes, stating, “The children are badly mentally scarred by what you did to them 30 years ago. Had these been a modern-day offences the sentence would have been much longer than they currently are. Custody is inevitable due to the serious nature of this offending and the lasting effect on the victims.”
Despite his community standing, Cowie’s true nature was exposed when one of his victims, overwhelmed by the trauma, sought counseling and questioned “why me?” The answer, as revealed during the trial, was Cowie’s controlling and violent nature. Witnesses described him as a foul-mouthed brute with a quick temper, who targeted vulnerable children who were unlikely to speak out.
The court heard that Cowie had attacked two different victims on separate occasions. The girl was subjected to indecent assault, including being ordered to wash his private parts, while the boy was physically assaulted—kicked in the stomach, thrown against a wall, and struck on the head. The woman who was victimized recounted how she escaped into nearby fields and created an imaginary safe haven in the woods to cope with the trauma inflicted by Cowie.
During the trial, Cowie’s family showed visible distress, with some members openly weeping in the public gallery. Cowie himself remained impassive, showing no remorse, and even attempted to shift blame onto his victims, claiming their accounts were false and motivated by personal vendettas. The court was told that Cowie’s actions had profoundly damaged the childhoods of the two victims, leading one to turn to gambling and theft, and the other to withdraw into her studies to avoid confronting her trauma.
Cowie’s history of violence extended beyond his childhood offenses. Police had cautioned him for common assault in 2002 and again in 2006, indicating a pattern of aggressive behavior. Despite his past, Cowie had managed to maintain a facade of respectability for many years.
Judge Bury highlighted the complexities surrounding cases of sexual abuse, noting that responses to such crimes often depend on factors like age, gender, and environment. He acknowledged that many victims delay reporting abuse due to fear or shame. In his sentencing remarks, the judge confirmed Cowie’s guilt on three counts of indecent assault on a girl and two counts of assault on a boy, while clearing him of six other similar charges.
As Cowie was led away to serve his sentence, members of his family, who had supported him throughout the trial, sat quietly in the courtroom, visibly upset. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Beverley, serving as a stark reminder of the hidden darkness that can lurk behind seemingly respectable facades.
