In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Andrew Carrington, a man from Scarborough, faced justice after attempting to engage in illegal sexual communication with what he believed to be a 13-year-old girl.The incident unfolded after Carrington arranged to meet the young girl for sex at a hotel in York, only for him to be confronted by paedophile hunters at his residence.
The courtroom proceedings at York Crown Court revealed chilling details of Carrington's online exchanges.
During the hearing, Richard Herrmann, the prosecutor, outlined that Carrington, aged 56, had used Facebook to send messages to a profile he thought belonged to a minor.
In his messages, he expressed a desire for sexual activity, stating, "I want to have sex with you," and inquired about the girl’s willingness to be raped, indicating a disturbing level of intent.
He also discussed meeting at a hotel in York for sexual purposes and even mentioned bringing spare clothes in case he caused any damage to her clothing or body, showing a premeditated approach to his intentions.
Additionally, Carrington was observed purchasing underwear in small sizes, further reflecting his focus on a minor.
However, the young girl was not real—she was a decoy operated by a paedophile hunter group vigilant against such criminal behavior.
The group had live-streamed the confrontation of Carrington at his home, which was subsequently recorded and shared on their Facebook platform.
The police responded swiftly after the confrontation and arrested Carrington on the spot.
Although he had made arrangements to meet the girl in York, Carrington chose not to go to the hotel after experiencing a change of heart.
Nonetheless, his attempt to commit a serious offence was evident, especially considering the girl had already booked rail tickets for the planned meeting.
It was evident from the investigation that Carrington had gotten cold feet about the actual encounter.
Carrington's legal representatives, notably Emily Hassell, conveyed that her client was deeply ashamed and expressed remorse for his actions.
Publicly, the consequences of his attempt became apparent when the community and authorities became aware of his conduct, prompting him to relocate from York to Scarborough for safety reasons.
As of now, Carrington resides at Washbeck Close in Scarborough.
He pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including attempting to arrange a child sex offence, attempting sexual communication with a minor, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act.
Notably, Carrington had no previous criminal record.
His sentencing saw him jailed for two years, and he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next decade.
Furthermore, a sexual harm prevention order was imposed for ten years, restricting his access to certain activities and online platforms.
The judge presiding over the case, the Recorder of York, Judge Sean Morris, remarked somberly, "You thought you were in a conversation with a 13-year-old girl.
Thank heaven you were not." He emphasized that although Carrington’s messages were highly vulgar and inappropriate, the fact that there was no actual child involved meant that there was no victim in the traditional sense.
The investigation revealed that Carrington’s initial contact was a simple inquisitive message—"Hi, do I know you?"—but he quickly escalated the conversation to explicit topics after learning the profile was purportedly that of a young girl.
He also implored the decoy not to disclose their exchange, underscoring his intent to hide his actions.
Emily Hassell added that since his arrest over two years ago, Carrington has completely disengaged from internet use and no longer possesses any devices capable of online access, indicating an effort to avoid future misconduct.
This case underscores the importance of vigilant community efforts in preventing child exploitation and the seriousness with which the justice system treats such offences.
