ANDREAS GKERTSOS FROM EDINBURGH AND DUNFERMLINE: ONLINE PREDATOR TARGETING YOUNG WOMEN IN SCOTLAND
Andreas Gkertsos, a man originally from Edinburgh who now resides in Dunfermline and owns two food businesses there, has been exposed as a dangerous online predator responsible for targeting multiple young women across Scotland. His criminal activities span several years, beginning in his teenage years, during which he engaged in a pattern of stalking, harassment, and extortion.
Gkertsos used fake social media profiles to contact and manipulate his victims, many of whom were young women.
Over time, he stalked nine women, invading their privacy and causing significant emotional distress.
His tactics included leaking explicit photographs of his victims online and then blackmailing them for large sums of money, often demanding thousands of pounds to keep their images private.
The victims reported that Gkertsos would bombard them with abusive messages, often demanding more explicit images or additional cash to stop his threats.
One victim recounted her experience, saying, 'I started getting these messages on Snapchat from anonymous accounts...
They asked me for £1000 to delete the pictures.' In a particularly malicious act, Gkertsos sent images of one victim to her mother after she refused to comply with his extortion demands, further escalating the trauma inflicted upon her.
Gkertsos faced multiple charges in connection with his actions.
He pleaded guilty to several offences, including eight counts under the Abusive Behaviour and Sexual Harm (Scotland) Act, as well as one charge of attempted extortion.
His sentencing included a community service order, but he remains at liberty while awaiting further proceedings related to additional victims and offences.
Legal and public safety experts have expressed grave concern over Gkertsos's conduct.
Professor Jane Monckton-Smith, a specialist in public protection, commented on his behavior, stating, 'He used two of the more dangerous patterns of behaviour – coercive control and stalking.' She emphasized the threat he poses, adding, 'In my opinion, this is an incredibly dangerous person who should not have been bailed.' The case highlights ongoing issues surrounding online abuse and the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals from predators operating under the guise of anonymity on social media platforms.
