GLASGOW MOTHER JAILED FOR FIVE YEARS FOR KILLING HER SIX-YEAR-OLD SON
A woman named Allison Campbell, aged 26, from Glasgow, was sentenced to five years in prison after she threw her six-year-old son, Derek, to his death from the balcony of their 14th-floor flat.
The incident occurred on October 27 last year.
Campbell, who struggled with alcohol and drug problems, woke her children with warnings of a fire before picking up Derek and pushing him over the balcony, despite neighbors hearing the boy scream, "Mum, don't do that." Attempts were made to resuscitate the boy, who was pronounced dead in hospital.
When police arrived, they found two fires in bedding within the flat.
Campbell was initially charged with murder but pleaded guilty to culpable homicide due to diminished responsibility after psychological assessments indicated she was significantly disturbed, suffering from depression and substance abuse issues.
During the hearing at Edinburgh High Court, Campbell wept as she received her sentence.
The judge, Lord Penrose, accepted the medical reports and ordered her to serve five years in prison.
Neighbors described Derek as "a little angel." Campbell's defense highlighted her mental health struggles, which had led to her hospital evaluation at Scotland's state hospital in Carstairs.
