ALISTAIR RANKIN CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE SHOCKS EALING AND ISLEWORTH

In October 2008, authorities revealed a disturbing case involving Alistair Rankin, a resident of North Common Road, Ealing, who was found to possess a significant collection of illegal images depicting child sexual abuse.

Despite employing advanced deletion software to conceal his activities, police computer experts managed to recover over 600 images from his devices, highlighting the severity of the offense.

During a detailed investigation, officers seized a Dell computer and a high-specification Mac computer from Rankin’s residence.

The Dell contained two particularly egregious images classified as level five, the most serious category, along with an additional 18 images categorized at a slightly lower level of severity.

The Mac, which was intended for graphics work—an unusual choice for typical personal use—also held copies of these illicit images, raising further concerns about Rankin’s activities.

Prosecutor Laura Steel explained that although some images were duplicated, the presence of a sophisticated deletion program complicated the recovery process.

She stated, “There was also a deletion programme which is specifically there to over-write and delete these images as soon as they have been viewed.

But the images were able to be recovered.” This demonstrated that despite his efforts to conceal the material, the evidence was still accessible to investigators.

Following his arrest in July of the previous year, Rankin was charged with 11 counts of making indecent images of children.

He was taken to Isleworth Crown Court, where he admitted to these charges.

At the time of his arrest, he denied any wrongdoing and was granted bail.

However, when he returned to the police station in January, he chose not to answer questions, further complicating his case.

His legal representative, Sophie Shotton, argued that Rankin was eager to seek help and expressed concern that imprisonment would hinder his ability to do so.

Despite this, the presiding judge, Recorder David Williams QC, acknowledged the seriousness of the offense but emphasized that a custodial sentence might not be the most effective form of punishment.

Instead, the judge imposed a three-year community supervision order.

This order requires Rankin to participate in sex offender treatment programs and attend a specialized internet sex offender group.

Additionally, he is prohibited from accessing the internet for a period of ten years and has had his Dell computer confiscated.

Furthermore, Rankin is mandated to register as a sex offender for five years, underscoring the ongoing nature of his monitoring and the gravity of his crimes.
