ALISTAIR NICHOLLS AND REBECCA FLATLEY FROM MARCH SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO FIVE-WEEK-OLD BABY
In a heartbreaking case that has shocked the community of March, the parents of a five-week-old infant have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in child cruelty. The incident came to light after the baby was brought to Peterborough City Hospital on March 18 of the previous year, suffering from multiple injuries that raised serious concerns among medical professionals.Upon examination, hospital experts identified a series of fractures in the child's body, including injuries to his leg and ankle. These injuries were determined to have been inflicted up to two weeks prior to the baby being admitted for a fresh arm fracture. The severity and timing of these injuries indicated a pattern of ongoing abuse and neglect, prompting a thorough investigation.
Alistair Nicholls, aged 25 and residing on Yarrow Close in March, faced multiple charges related to causing grievous bodily harm with intent, as well as neglect. Although he initially denied the allegations of causing the injuries, he admitted to causing harm under the broader charge of child cruelty. His actions and subsequent admission highlighted a disturbing failure to protect and care for his vulnerable infant.
Rebecca Flatley, aged 23 and living on The Junction in March, also faced charges of child cruelty. She admitted to neglecting her child's health needs by failing to seek medical attention promptly, thereby allowing the injuries to go untreated and worsening the child's suffering.
Both parents appeared before Peterborough Crown Court last Friday, where the judge sentenced Nicholls to two and a half years in prison. Flatley received a nine-month sentence. The court's decision underscores the seriousness with which the justice system treats cases of child abuse and neglect, especially involving such a young and defenseless victim.
Detective Constable Amanda Sylvester, who led the investigation, expressed her condemnation of the case. She stated, “This was a distressing case as the baby was let down by the two people who should have been protecting him. His father caused these terrible injuries after losing control of his temper then failed to take him to hospital for treatment. We will not tolerate abuse against children and will work tirelessly to ensure justice for such vulnerable victims.”
