EX-SHERIFF ALISTAIR DUFF FINED FOR OFFENSIVE PHONE REMARKS
Former sheriff Alistair Duff has been fined £1,275 at Edinburgh Sheriff Court after pleading guilty to uttering sexual and racist remarks during a phone conversation.
The incident occurred during the lunch break of an online training course for justices of the peace, which the sheriff was conducting from his home.
Three attendees, who returned early, overheard the remarks and were sufficiently concerned to report them to the police.
It was later established that the sheriff had not realized his microphone was on.
The conversation involved comments that were sexually and racially offensive.
The court sentenced Duff to pay a fine of £1,275.
John Scullion KC commented that the incident has 'ended in ignominy,' emphasizing that Duff's long career has been marred by this disgrace.
Sheriff Douglas Kerr acknowledged that there was no significant sexual element to the offence but described the case as 'troubling and anxious,' considering Duff’s 'long and distinguished career' when determining the penalty.
