MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL DOMESTIC ABUSE CAMPAIGN IN INVERNESS
An Inverness man named Alistair Birss has been sentenced to 27 months in jail for committing a series of serious domestic assaults on his former partner. The court heard that Birss admitted to multiple violent acts, including punching Cassandra Alison-Reddington in the head and body, pushing her onto an armchair while covering her mouth with a tea towel, and compressing her neck.
On another occasion, he straddled her and pressed his hands around her neck to restrict her breathing, shouted in her ear, and punched her.
He even followed her into the bathroom attempting to lift her and push her against a wall, causing her severe injury.
These assaults took place over various dates between September 16 and October 14, 2015.
Birss has also been ordered to serve a five-year non-harassment order, preventing him from approaching his ex-partner after his release.
Additional incidents included dragging her across a room, slapping her, headbutting her, and pushing her onto furniture, with repeated acts of bodily harm and attempted strangulation.
His defense argued that he may have been suffering from depression and expressed remorse for his actions.
Sheriff Gordon Fleetwood acknowledged the horrendous nature of the crimes and confirmed that Birss's custodial sentence is well justified.
