BORDERS MAN, 82, ORDERED TO PAY COMPENSATION AFTER STALKING WOMAN
AN 82-YEAR-OLD man has been ordered to pay £400 in compensation to a 24-year-old woman he was stalking.
Alexander Lauder, of Southfield, St Boswells, pleaded guilty to engaging in a course of conduct likely to cause the woman fear and alarm by repeatedly attending at her place of work, attempting to contact her, and following her.
The offence took place at a shop in Kelso and a store in Newtown St Boswells between October 16 last year and February 24.
The victim, who had a close relationship with Lauder's family, had grown up near him and his late wife, and she used to do grocery shopping for them.
Despite asking Lauder to leave her alone and changing her phone number in 2020, he made several attempts to contact her, including trying to approach her in public and driving past her while staring or gesturing.
Although Lauder did not intend to upset her, he was considered reckless after being warned by police.
Sheriff Peter Paterson admonished Lauder on the stalking charge, ordered him to pay the woman £400, and imposed a Non-Harassment Order preventing any contact with her for five years.
