WARRINGTON MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ATTACK
A violent partner who nearly caused his girlfriend's death in a brutal attack was sentenced to an extended jail term to protect society and potential future partners.'Disgraceful' and cowardly, Alex Thompson, 38, of Payne Close, Great Sankey, Warrington, viciously punched and kicked his girlfriend in the early hours of March 31, 2023, resulting in life-threatening internal bleeding.
The attack occurred after a night out at a pub, which turned sour following an argument at home.
Thompson, described as 'powerfully built,' repeatedly struck her in the face and body despite her pleas for him to stop because she feared for her life.
He also yanked out a clump of her hair and punched her in the abdomen, causing serious internal injuries.
It was not his first offense; in 2017 he punched a previous partner multiple times, and in 2021 he shoved another woman to the ground, causing injuries.
Thompson denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent but was found guilty after a trial in September and appeared for sentencing at Liverpool Crown Court on October 24.
The court imposed an 11-year extended sentence, which includes seven years in custody and a further four years on license, due to his dangerousness.
Judge Andrew Menary noted that Thompson's past convictions for domestic violence, including 22 offences such as assaulting partners, disorderly conduct, and assaulting police, significantly aggravate his current case.
The sentencing aimed to safeguard the public and any future partners, emphasizing Thompson's history of violence and recent behavior, including police violence footage after the attack.
