BIRMINGHAM NURSE INVOLVED IN RAPE AND ASSAULT ALLEGATIONS FACES INVESTIGATION
A nurse from Small Heath, Birmingham, named Albert Rampaul, has been involved in serious allegations at a psychiatric hospital. He was accused of raping a 74-year-old grandmother and indecently assaulting another woman while working at the Avonside unit at Yardley Green Hospital, operated by North Birmingham Mental Health Trust.
Rampaul was tried and acquitted of the rape in Birmingham Crown Court in May 2003.
The trial revealed that both the prosecution and defense agreed the grandmother was subjected to a sex attack; however, police found no DNA evidence as she had used a condom.
It was noted that Rampaul was the only male nurse on duty the night of the assault in August 2002, and the victim died from a brain tumor a month later.
Additionally, three years prior, a 65-year-old patient, a former policewoman, accused Rampaul of indecent assault involving the spraying of a corrosive chemical, which left her with severe burns.
Despite the investigation, there was not enough evidence for criminal prosecution.
Although he was cleared of criminal charges, Rampaul faced civil action from victims' families and was later sacked for gross misconduct but successfully challenged his dismissal.
Currently, Rampaul can still work as a nurse elsewhere, which has caused concern among the victims' families who advocate for him to be fully struck off the nursing register.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council is investigating the allegations, but inquiries are still in the early stages.
