ADAM JONES FROM RHUDDLAN SENTENCED IN DENBIGHSHIRE FOR INDECENT SELFIE TO SCHOOLGIRL
In October 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving Adam Jones, a 32-year-old man from Rhuddlan, Denbighshire, who was convicted of sending an indecent photograph to a young girl under the age of 13. The incident drew significant attention from the local community and the courts, highlighting the ongoing issues of online exploitation and the importance of safeguarding minors.Jones, residing at Rhodfa Annwyl in Rhuddlan, was sentenced to a total of 27 months in prison following his conviction at Mold Crown Court. In addition to his imprisonment, he was subjected to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his activities and contact with minors. Furthermore, he was ordered to register as a sex offender with the police for a decade, a measure aimed at monitoring his conduct and preventing further offenses.
The presiding judge, Rhys Rowlands, expressed concern over Jones’s criminal history, noting that he had previous convictions for exposure. Describing the case as “all rather worrying,” Judge Rowlands emphasized the gravity of Jones’s actions and their impact on the victim. Despite denying all charges initially, Jones was ultimately convicted by a jury at Mold Crown Court after evidence was presented that proved his guilt.
During sentencing, Judge Rowlands remarked that Jones showed no remorse for his actions and appeared to have only a limited understanding of the harm caused to the young girl. The judge pointed out that Jones had taken advantage of the victim, and his conduct had a profound and lasting effect on her mental health. The court heard that Jones had repeatedly sent images of himself, breaching a previous sexual harm prevention order, which underscores a pattern of concerning behavior.
In his remarks, Judge Rowlands condemned Jones’s actions, stating, “In the eyes of right-thinking people, there is something very, very wrong when a man such as yourself repeatedly exposes yourself and gets a thrill from sending a photo of your penis to a young child.” However, the judge clarified that the selfie, taken while Jones was lying on a bed, did not definitively show him engaging in a sexual act, which could have warranted a more severe sentence.
Prosecutor Elen Owen presented a victim impact statement, revealing that the young girl had experienced flashbacks and was undergoing counseling as a result of Jones’s behavior. The court also noted that Jones did not accept the jury’s verdicts and believed himself to be victimized, despite his previous convictions for exposure in Denbigh and Abergele in 2010. These prior incidents involved exposing himself to adult women, further illustrating a pattern of inappropriate conduct.
Defense lawyer Simon Killeen argued that Jones had been cleared of another related charge, which the prosecution had suggested involved grooming. The pre-sentence report indicated that Jones himself acknowledged a potential need for help, suggesting some awareness of his issues. Despite this, the jury convicted him last month by majority verdicts of sexual assault, causing a child to watch a sexual act, and breaching his sexual harm prevention order. He was acquitted of additional charges, including another sexual assault and engaging in a sexual act in the presence of a child, but the overall verdict reflected serious concerns about his conduct and the safety of minors in the community.
