GLASGOW MAN JAILED FOR SEX ATTACK AT STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
An Iranian man who claimed asylum in the UK was jailed on Friday after carrying out a sex attack on a woman at student accommodation in Glasgow.Abdullah Aminpur (25) exposed himself to the victim and raped her during the assault on December 5 in 2021.
Aminpur, of Green Street, Glasgow, had denied carrying out the rape attack at student halls during a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, but was found guilty of committing the sex crime by a majority verdict of the jury.
The court heard that after arriving in Britain he made a claim for asylum which was granted for a limited period of time.
Following the verdict of the jury advocate depute Jennifer Cameron tendered a victim impact statement to the court from the student who was attacked by Aminpur.
Defence counsel Paul Nelson KC said a background report would be required on the first offender ahead of sentencing next month.
Aminpur was on bail since an initial court appearance last year and Mr Nelson asked for it to be continued.
But judge Norman McFadyen rejected the motion and told the rapist: "Given the nature of the charge of which you have been convicted you will be remanded in custody meantime." The judge told jurors who heard the trial that it had been an "anxious case".
Aminpur was placed on the sex offenders' register.
