PETERLEE MAN OFFERED VAPES TO GIRL, 13, FOR SEXUAL FAVOURS
A man in his early 20s sought sexual favours from a 13-year-old girl in lieu of payment for vapes, a court heard.
Durham Crown Court was told that Cameron Lowther, now 24, began messaging the girl on Snapchat when he was 21 and she was 12.
He initially approached her with compliments and offered to buy her vapes, but suggested she do something sexual for him instead.
Despite her declining, they later met behind shops where he asked for a kiss.
The court heard that Lowther's messages became sexual in nature, and he asked her not to reveal the messages.
The girl disclosed to her mother that she received unwanted sexual attention, and police found messages where Lowther asked for sexual favours in return for vapes.
Lowther, of Torver Close, Peterlee, admitted a charge of sexual communication with a child.
The court noted he has limited past offences, only for driving and criminal damage, but nothing sexual, and he has never been to custody.
The judge sentenced him to a six-month suspended imprisonment for two years, with 45 rehabilitation activity days.
Restrictions over future contact with minors and use of the internet through a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) were imposed, with a seven-year registration as a sex offender.
