ZOLTAN EDES FROM ANDOVER SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE IN WINCHESTER
In January 1990, the case against Zoltan Edes, a resident of Andover in Hampshire, was brought before Winchester Crown Court. Edes faced serious charges related to the sexual abuse of a young girl, which spanned over a period of five years. The court proceedings revealed that Edes had engaged in indecent assault and unlawful sexual intercourse with the girl, starting from when she was just 11 years old.During the trial, Edes admitted to the allegations, acknowledging his involvement in the abuse. The court also heard that the girl’s father was complicit in the crimes, having admitted to aiding and abetting the indecent assault. The disturbing details of the case painted a picture of manipulation and exploitation within what was supposed to be a safe family environment.
According to reports, Edes’s religious beliefs played a significant role in the abuse. His faith was described as a mixture of fantasy, prayers, and Bible readings, which he used to convince both the father and the girl that he possessed supernatural powers capable of fighting evil. The court learned that Edes conducted what he termed 'rituals' in a specially converted room in the father’s house, known as 'the Purple Room.'
Within this setting, Edes engaged in sexual acts with the young girl and performed rituals that involved bizarre and disturbing practices. One such ritual included making the girl lie across him so that their bodies formed the shape of a cross, a disturbing act justified by Edes’s warped interpretation of religious symbolism.
The girl later described her experience, stating: 'Because it was all normal crosses and readings from the Bible, I thought nothing could be wrong. We were not worshipping the devil or sacrificing chickens.' Her words highlight the manipulation and deception used by Edes to justify his actions and to convince the girl that her abuse was somehow religiously acceptable.
The court’s findings and the testimonies led to a conviction, bringing to an end a long period of suffering for the victim. The case underscores the dangers of religious manipulation and the importance of safeguarding children from exploitation by those who abuse faith for their own sinister purposes.
