ZOHAIB KHAN AND PRIYA SIDHU'S HORRIFIC CRUELTY IN BEDFORD LEADS TO SENTENCING

Zohaib Khan, born on October 24, 1995, and Priya Sidhu, born on June 2, 1998, both residents of 11 Adelaide Square in Bedford, faced the grim consequences of their actions after causing the death of a five-month-old kitten named Coco. The couple was found guilty of a serious animal welfare offence, with the case highlighting the neglect and cruelty inflicted upon the defenseless animal.

Initially, on May 27, 2022, Khan and Sidhu took Coco to a veterinary clinic claiming that she had fallen from a sofa and injured her leg. The vet examined the kitten and advised that she would need specialized surgical intervention to address her injuries. However, the couple did not return for the follow-up treatment, leaving Coco in a state of suffering. Less than three months later, on August 6, 2022, RSPCA inspector Stephen Reeves was contacted by Khan and Sidhu, who requested that he come to their residence to collect Coco, who was in a critically injured condition.

Inspector Reeves recounted that upon arrival, he was told by the couple that they could not afford the necessary veterinary care for Coco. The inspector observed that the kitten was suffering from multiple severe injuries and was unable to stand. The injuries included wounds to her lips and ears, broken teeth, fractures in both of her hind legs, a dislocated pelvic bone, a fractured jaw, and what was believed to be a sternum fracture. Despite efforts to treat her, Coco succumbed to her injuries while under sedation.

Expert veterinary witness Dr. Sean Taylor examined Coco and noted discrepancies in the accounts provided by Khan and Sidhu. Neither of them could offer a reasonable explanation for the extent and severity of the injuries sustained by the kitten. It was ultimately concluded that Khan was responsible for causing the most significant suffering to Coco. Dr. Taylor stated that Coco had endured physical abuse, experiencing fear, distress, and pain over a period of at least four days, likely longer.

Following the court proceedings, inspector Reeves expressed his condemnation of the couple’s actions, emphasizing that Coco’s death was entirely unnecessary and that the pain inflicted during her brief life was profound. The court handed down sentences reflecting the severity of the cruelty involved.

Priya Sidhu received a 12-month community order, which included 15 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and 80 hours of unpaid work. She was also ordered to pay £400 in costs and was banned from keeping any animals for a period of 10 years. Zohaib Khan received a more severe penalty, with an 18-week custodial sentence suspended for 12 months, along with 25 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and 80 hours of unpaid work.
