CHELTENHAM MAN GIVEN HOSPITAL ORDER AFTER KILLING MOTHER
Zak O'Neill, 21 years old and residing on Salamanca Road in Cheltenham, was convicted of murdering his mother, Michelle O'Neill, on 15 March 2022.The court was told that he confessed to the act and was subsequently subject to a hospital order after pleading guilty to manslaughter with diminished responsibility.
The presiding judge characterized the case as 'the stuff of nightmares' and stated there was no indication of prior conflict or animosity between mother and son before the incident.
Michelle, aged 47, was found with multiple stab wounds to her face and neck.
It was revealed during proceedings that Zak had contacted police the day before the killing, expressing concerns about his mental health and believing he was on a spiritual journey or quest, attempting to save their souls.
During the attack, Zak also caused injuries to himself.
Judge William Hart highlighted the tragic nature of the case, emphasizing Michelle's status as a loved mother and describing her death as occurring under brutal circumstances.
Psychiatric evaluations showed Zak was delusional due to mental illness, which impacted his behavior.
It was also disclosed that Zak had previously sought mental health support and had voiced fears about his own dangerousness.
He was found injured near the scene and later told authorities he heard voices and was unsure of his identity.
The court remarked that Zak is a 'kind and caring person,' with former managers at Domino’s describing him as approachable and friendly.
The case’s tragic outcome is largely attributed to his mental health issues, and he remains under strict restrictions preventing discharge or transfer from hospital without approval from the Ministry of Justice.
