A RAPIST has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison after attacking a woman in Benfleet.
Zahid Hussain, aged 27, was found guilty of raping a 21-year-old woman in London Road and then fleeing the scene, leaving her injured.
The incident occurred early in the morning on Saturday, May 12 last year.
Hussain, of Parkway, Ilford, was arrested on the same day at his home.
He denied the rape but was convicted at Ipswich Crown Court in November.
Subsequently, he was sentenced at Peterborough Crown Court, where he was also placed on the sex offenders' register.
Investigating officer DC Adam High commented that Hussain showed no remorse and maintained his innocence throughout the process, while the victim received support from her family and police.
She is described as an incredibly strong-willed woman who can now begin to rebuild her life.
