DANESFIELD MAN DAVID BOWDEN CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN BENFLEET
In a case that has shocked the local community of Benfleet, David Bowden, a 68-year-old former photographer for the Ministry of Defence, was found to possess a significant collection of indecent images involving children. The incident came to light after police executed a search warrant at Bowden’s residence on his birthday in 2018, uncovering a disturbing cache of illegal material.During the court proceedings at Basildon Crown Court, Bowden admitted to charges related to the creation and possession of indecent photographs of children, as well as possessing extreme pornography and other prohibited images. Despite the severity of the evidence, Bowden was spared immediate imprisonment, receiving a sentence that included a suspended prison term, a fine, and mandatory rehabilitation.
Prosecutor John Oliver detailed the extent of the material found during the raid. Over a thousand images were recovered from Bowden’s home, including 35 images classified as Category A, which is considered the most serious and disturbing type of child abuse imagery. Additionally, there were ten Category B images and three Category C images, along with four still images of extreme pornography and 83 moving images. The total number of prohibited images exceeded 1,100, highlighting the gravity of the case.
In his police interview, Bowden claimed that the images had been downloaded unintentionally, suggesting they came along with other legal adult pornography he had accessed over several years. However, the prosecution did not accept this explanation, emphasizing the illegal nature and the disturbing content of the images.
Judge Cohen sentenced Bowden to eight months in prison, suspended for a period, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed further offences. Additionally, Bowden was ordered to pay a fine of £500 and undertake 40 hours of rehabilitation to address his conduct. The case has raised concerns within the Benfleet community about the presence of such disturbing material in the possession of a local resident, and it underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat child exploitation and illegal pornography.
