YASIR MEHMOOD FROM BIRMINGHAM SENTENCED AFTER BRUTAL DOMESTIC ATTACK

In a disturbing case that unfolded in Birmingham, Yasir Mehmood, a 39-year-old man from Washwood Heath, was convicted of violently assaulting his wife on the same day. The incident, which took place within the confines of their home, involved a series of brutal attacks that left the victim with significant injuries and emotional trauma.

According to court reports, the assault was triggered after the victim attempted to soothe her husband by offering to warm his tea, hoping to calm him down. Instead of calming, Mehmood's anger erupted violently. He forcefully shoved her head against a wall, then proceeded to kick her repeatedly while she was on the floor. During the assault, he also grabbed her by the throat, choking her and preventing her from calling for help. At one point, he covered her mouth to silence her as she tried to seek assistance. The attack was so severe that he ran away from the scene before police arrived, leaving his wife injured and distressed.

Mehmood was subsequently arrested and taken into custody. Despite denying two charges of assault, he was found guilty after a trial held at Birmingham Magistrates' Court. His legal representative argued that he was a man of good character, with no prior criminal record, and that he had accepted responsibility for his actions. Nevertheless, the court did not find these arguments sufficient to mitigate the seriousness of the offence.

The magistrates sentenced Mehmood to 12 weeks in prison. During the sentencing, detention officers were called into the courtroom to handcuff him and escort him to the detention cells. The court considered the possibility of a suspended sentence but ultimately decided against it, citing the domestic nature of the offence and the fact that it occurred within the victim’s home. The judge emphasized that the attack was not an isolated incident but was prolonged and repeated, even after Mehmood returned to the scene. The court also imposed a two-year restraining order, explicitly banning him from contacting his wife.

Details of the case revealed that the couple had been married for 13 years, with the victim describing a history of aggressive behaviour from Mehmood that she had previously chosen not to report out of fear. The court recounted an incident on December 8, 2020, when Mehmood initially appeared in a good mood but then suddenly became aggressive. He shouted, swore, and physically assaulted her by slamming her head against the wall, kicking her, and choking her despite her pleas for him to stop. When police arrived after he fled the scene, the victim was found with a lump on her head and bruises covering her body.

Further incidents occurred later that night when Mehmood barged into the bedroom at around 11 pm, grabbed her by the hair, threw her to the floor, and choked her again. He was apprehended nearby after fleeing the scene. The injuries sustained by the victim included head trauma and extensive bruising, highlighting the severity of the assault.

In court, the judge emphasized that the prison sentence was immediate and justified given the seriousness of the offence and its domestic context. The judge also noted that the attack was both prolonged and repeated, underscoring the need for a firm legal response. Mehmood was taken into custody following the sentencing, and the court issued the two-year restraining order to protect the victim from further contact or harassment.
