NORTHFIELD MOTHER JAILED FOR CHILD NEGLECT AFTER SON'S DEATH
A woman named Nadia Rogers, aged 23, from Northfield, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison by Birmingham Crown Court for child cruelty.The case involved the death of her 27-month-old son, Kai Nayan Rogers.
The court was told that Nadia had neglected her child by leaving him home alone and not providing proper nourishment.
Mr.
Justice Hunt described the child's condition as 'grossly neglected' and stated that 'The fact is your own needs and selfishness overrode the need to give him the barest of support.' He further explained, 'Your son was left for long periods of time confined to his room.
He was given sparse quantities of food and liquid.' The judge viewed disturbing photographs of the child and emphasized the severity of the neglect.
Nadia Rogers had previously admitted a charge of child cruelty, and although she was also accused of manslaughter, this charge was withdrawn due to uncertain medical evidence linking her to her child's death.
Prosecutor Julia Macur mentioned that police found Kai already dead when they arrived at the home on December 10, 2002, and that Nadia had been increasingly leaving him alone during the two weeks prior to his death, rendering him unable to access food and drink.
During the trial, her defense emphasized that she had not been proven to unlawfully kill her child, with her lawyer Timothy Raggatt stating, 'It was important to state that Rogers had not been shown to have unlawfully killed her child especially in the climate we are in this week.' The entire case highlights severe neglect leading to the tragic death of a young child.
