WILLIAM MAYNE JAILED FOR SEX ABUSE IN LEYBURN AND THORNTON RUST

In a case that has shocked the community, William Mayne, a renowned children's author from Thornton Rust near Leyburn, North Yorkshire, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison for a series of sexual offenses committed against young girls over four decades ago.

Mayne, aged 76, was also ordered to register as a sex offender and was permanently prohibited from working with children. The sentencing took place at Teesside Crown Court, where the court heard detailed accounts of his crimes spanning from 1960 to 1975.

Throughout the proceedings, Mayne's defense team called upon several individuals to provide character references, emphasizing his contributions to literature and education. Support letters from across the globe were presented to Judge David Bryant, portraying Mayne as a dedicated and talented man whose work had brought joy and inspiration to countless children over the years.

David Robson, representing Mayne, argued before the court: "It is right to consider the evil acts committed by this man against the immense good he has done for young people and society at large. The court must weigh the pain inflicted on these victims against the positive influence he has had over the decades."

Mayne, who has authored more than 130 books and was once celebrated as "our most prestigious living writer for the young," admitted to 11 charges of indecent assault. These offenses occurred during the early 1960s to mid-1970s. The trial, which took place in March, saw Mayne attempt to withdraw his admissions last week after dismissing his original legal team, claiming he had been coerced into changing his pleas.

Two additional charges of indecent assault involving two sisters, which Mayne denied, were left on the court's record. The jury was also instructed to find him not guilty of two charges of rape.

Prosecutor Richard Mansell emphasized the breach of trust involved in the case, stating, "William Mayne exploited the trust placed in him by children and their parents."

Judge Bryant expressed his disappointment, remarking: "You have shown little remorse or understanding for the harm caused to these girls. While I acknowledge the tragedy this case represents for you, I must also recognize the profound suffering endured by each of the victims."

Mayne's case has garnered widespread attention, not only because of the severity of the crimes but also due to his prominent status as an influential figure in children's literature. His legacy, marred by these allegations, leaves a lasting impact on the community of Leyburn and Thornton Rust.
