JOHN BARRY FINBAR KENIRY FROM COUNTY CORK AND LEYBURN SENTENCED FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE

John Barry Finbar Keniry, commonly known as 'Barry,' a man with connections to County Cork and Leyburn, has been handed a suspended prison sentence following a conviction related to serious domestic abuse offenses. The incident that led to his sentencing occurred at a residence located on North Road in Middleham, Leyburn, on April 11, 2020. During this assault, Keniry was reported to have physically grasped a woman around her throat, which caused visible reddening of her skin and resulted in an injury to her nose. This act of violence was part of a broader pattern of abusive behavior that the court considered during sentencing.

In addition to the assault, Keniry was found guilty of engaging in controlling and coercive conduct towards the same woman at the same address, starting from July 1, 2016. This conduct involved emotional abuse and manipulation, including controlling her work and social activities, which caused her significant emotional distress. Such behavior is recognized as a form of domestic abuse that can have long-lasting psychological effects on victims.

Keniry was initially arrested on April 11, 2020, but after being released on conditional bail, he failed to surrender himself and subsequently absconded. Despite his absence, he was later convicted in his absence at York Magistrates’ Court. Currently, he resides in Killeagh, County Cork, Ireland, far from the scene of the offenses. His sentencing took place at Bolton Crown Court on July 8, where he received a 20-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. As part of the court’s order, Keniry was also subjected to an indefinite restraining order, prohibiting him from contacting or approaching the victim.

Police Constable Alex Saggers emphasized the impact of Keniry’s actions, noting that his conduct caused considerable hardship to the victim. He also highlighted the importance of supporting victims of domestic abuse and coercive control, encouraging those affected to seek help through North Yorkshire Police. The court made it clear that if Keniry breaches the restraining order or commits any further offenses within the next two years, he will be required to serve the original prison sentence in full. The article underscores the importance of not tolerating toxic and destructive relationship behaviors and urges victims to report abuse to authorities or seek immediate assistance if they are in danger.
