WILLIAM JAMES FROM HIGHAM FERRERS SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE VIDEOS AND IMAGES
In August 2022, a disturbing case unfolded at Northampton Crown Court involving William James, a resident of Higham Ferrers, who was convicted of possessing and sharing extremely disturbing child abuse material. The court heard that James, who was previously known as Stephen Umney, was found to have a vast collection of illicit videos and images depicting the sexual abuse of very young children, including toddlers and infants.During the proceedings, it was revealed that James, aged 39, had a disturbing 'thirst' for such material, which he actively sought out and shared with others online. Evidence showed that he used Skype as a platform to exchange these vile files, even making comments about running out of 'baby stuff,' indicating a disturbing preoccupation with very young children. One of the messages he sent to another paedophile read, “My range is mainly from todds (toddlers) to my own age lol,” highlighting the disturbing nature of his interests. He also told an associate that he was “running out of baby stuff” and joked about what he had left to send.
Authorities executed a warrant at James’s residence in Higham Ferrers in 2020, leading to the seizure of multiple devices, including phones, a USB stick, and a computer. The phones contained over 1,000 vile images and videos, with 382 classified as 'category A,' indicating the most severe level of abuse. Among these was a distressing video believed to depict a one-year-old boy being subjected to acts too horrific to describe. The USB stick and computer held an additional 6,000 files, including 1,636 'category A' images, further illustrating the extent of James’s disturbing collection.
Prosecutor Caroline Bray emphasized the gravity of the case, stating, “When he said it was nothing that bad, it was not true.” The investigation also uncovered a recording of a Skype call where another man was watching footage of a baby being abused. Additionally, images sent by a teenage boy, who was identified by officers, were found, although there was no evidence of direct communication between James and the boy.
Further searches revealed that James had actively searched for very young children being abused, with search terms indicating a focus on toddlers. He also secretly recorded a video in a public toilet cubicle, adding to the disturbing nature of his actions.
During the hearing, James appeared via videolink from HMP Peterborough, visibly emotional, crying and wiping tears throughout the proceedings. The court was informed that he suffers from anxiety and depression, which may have contributed to his curiosity and subsequent fixation on indecent images of children.
Recorder Stuart Sprawson sentenced James to two years and ten months in prison, with the judge noting the presence of many victims and the serious threat James posed to children. The court ordered that he serve half of his sentence before being released on licence. Additionally, James will be subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and will remain on the sex offender register for life, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to society.
