WILLIAM HASTINGS FROM OLDHAM CAUGHT WITH CHILD ABUSE IMAGES IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case uncovered in May 2017, a resident of Oldham named William Hastings was found to possess highly disturbing and illegal images on his personal computer equipment.The police conducted a raid on his residence, located in Great Meadows, High Crompton, and during the search, they discovered a collection of child abuse photographs that shocked the authorities and the community alike.
Thirteen of these images were classified in the most severe Category A bracket, depicting children as young as four years old engaged in sexual acts.
In addition to these photographs, investigators also uncovered two videos stored on Hastings' desktop system.
One of these videos was notably lengthy, exceeding an hour in duration, further emphasizing the severity of the material found.
Justin Hayhoe, the prosecutor in the case, explained that upon examining the computer equipment, investigators found software designed to facilitate the sharing of such illicit material over the internet.
Although there was no concrete evidence to suggest that Hastings had actively uploaded or distributed these images, the presence of such software indicated a clear intent or capability to do so.
Furthermore, investigators discovered that Hastings had installed additional software aimed at concealing his online identity, which he might have used to search for child pornography material anonymously.
Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court was informed that Hastings had used various search engines to look for images involving young girls and boys engaged in different forms of sexual activity.
This pattern of searches revealed a disturbing interest in child exploitation, raising serious concerns about his motives and intentions.
During sentencing, Judge Bernadette Baxter addressed Hastings directly, questioning his motives and the apparent contradiction between his personal life and his criminal behavior.
She remarked, “You were in a relationship, making your way in the world, why on Earth did you get involved in this?
You clearly had an interest in pictures of children, and you had fairly sophisticated software.
A great deal of thought went into what you did.
You are going to have to grapple with the demons that led you to this depraved behaviour.” While the judge acknowledged the gravity of the crimes, she also noted Hastings’ immediate guilty plea and his previously clean record as mitigating factors.
As a result, she sentenced him to ten months in prison but suspended the sentence for two years, allowing him to avoid immediate incarceration under certain conditions.
In addition to his suspended sentence, Hastings was ordered to participate in a sexual offenders treatment program and will be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for a period of ten years.
These measures aim to monitor and rehabilitate him, preventing any future offenses and protecting the community from potential harm.
