WILLIAM FLETCHER OF COWBRIDGE CAUGHT IN CHILD PORN AND SEXUAL OFFENSES
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, William Fletcher, a resident of Cowbridge, was sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of multiple serious charges related to child exploitation and indecent images. The investigation, which involved international cooperation, uncovered a disturbing pattern of illegal activity linked to Fletcher's computer equipment.Authorities in the United States traced the illegal downloads of child abuse images directly to Fletcher’s device, which was located in Clifton at the time. The Bristol Crown Court heard that over a period of five years, Fletcher had accumulated an extensive collection of illicit material, including thousands of indecent photographs of children. These images ranged from less severe categories to the most heinous, with 26,272 images classified as Category C, indicating less severe abuse, and a chilling 1,612 images categorized as Category A, depicting children being raped.
Further investigation revealed that Fletcher had not only downloaded these images but also shared some of them via Skype with an individual overseas who was also involved in child exploitation. This act of distribution highlighted the extent of his engagement in the illegal trade of child abuse material. The police also discovered that Fletcher had uploaded “non-indecent” child images to a file-sharing platform based in Russia, seemingly in an attempt to exchange images with others involved in similar illicit activities.
Adding to the severity of his crimes, Fletcher admitted to filming himself engaging in sexual acts while viewing images of children. This self-filming was part of his disturbing pattern of behavior. In addition to his online activities, Fletcher was found to have stolen 49 pairs of female underwear, 47 of which belonged to children, suggesting a sexual motive behind the thefts.
Fletcher, who was also known to authorities for his previous offenses, pleaded guilty to three charges of making indecent images of children, three charges of distributing such images, and possession of two extreme pornographic images. He also admitted to the theft of the underwear. As part of his sentencing, Fletcher was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely and was subject to an Sexual Harm Prevention Order designed to prevent any future offenses.
Mark Hollier, prosecuting, explained that the police, acting on intelligence from the US, arrested Fletcher in August of the previous year. The analysis of his electronic devices revealed a deeply disturbing pattern of child exploitation, with evidence of both possession and distribution of illegal images, as well as self-filming of sexual acts involving children. The case underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling such heinous crimes and protecting vulnerable victims from ongoing abuse.
