CLIVE DOSTER SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS FOR ABUSING VULNERABLE GIRL IN COWBRIDGE
In August 2016, a man named Clive Doster, aged 69, from Downs View in Cowbridge, was convicted of a series of serious sexual offenses against a young girl. Despite denying 12 counts of indecent assault on a child, Doster was found guilty by a jury in July after a detailed trial held at Cardiff Crown Court.Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Doster’s abusive behavior began in the late 1980s and continued over several years, spanning into the girl’s teenage years. The court heard that the victim was particularly vulnerable, which made her an easy target for Doster’s predatory actions. The court described her as “a vulnerable young girl,” emphasizing her susceptibility and the gravity of the offenses committed against her.
Recorder Catherine Brown, presiding over the case, delivered a stern sentence, condemning Doster’s conduct. She highlighted that Doster had turned conversations sexual by referring to the girl’s private parts and had given her attention in a manner that effectively dared her to engage in sexual activity. The judge pointed out that Doster’s actions were not isolated but persisted over an extended period, causing lasting harm to the victim.
During the sentencing, Recorder Brown noted that the abuse continued into the girl’s teenage years, further aggravating the case. Prosecutor Marian Lewis argued that Doster remained in denial about his actions and expressed concern that there was a risk of him offending again in the future. The court also considered the fact that Doster had instructed the girl not to tell anyone about the abuse, which compounded the severity of his misconduct.
In her remarks, Recorder Brown emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, stating, “These are very serious offences against a vulnerable young girl over an extended period. It is quite clear that your offending has had a lasting effect upon her, but you have shown no remorse or insight into your offending.”
As a result of the conviction, Doster was sentenced to six years in prison. Additionally, he will be automatically barred from working with young people or vulnerable adults, a measure intended to protect others from potential harm. The case underscores the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals and highlights the devastating impact of such abuse.
