WILLIAM CAMERON

A former chiropodist from Fife, who was found to have sexually abused young boys during camping trips at Scottish scenic locations, has been placed under a guardianship order.

William Cameron was determined by a sheriff to have committed sexual offenses against boys between 1986 and 1992.

The 77-year-old was charged and was scheduled for a jury trial at Dundee Sheriff Court, but it was decided he was unfit to stand trial.

An inquiry into the facts was held, during which evidence was presented and scrutinized before Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith.

Multiple reports about Cameron were compiled, and it was later established that he suffers from a form of dementia.

Cameron, who resides in Leven, engaged in lewd, indecent, or inappropriate behavior towards a boy on numerous occasions from November 1986 to November 1990.

He assaulted the boy and was found to have lain naked on top of him inside a tent located at Loch Lednock reservoir near Comrie, as well as at addresses in Edinburgh and other sites.

The same boy was also indecently assaulted by Cameron, who also worked as a podiatrist, during the period from November 1990 to November 1992.

These incidents occurred at similar locations and included an incident during a train journey traveling between England and Scotland.

Between February 1986 and 1987, Cameron was partially undressed when he entered a sleeping bag in a tent and placed his arm around another boy.

This indecent assault happened at the Lairig Ghru mountain pass in the Cairngorms.

A third victim was coaxed into sleeping naked next to Cameron inside a tent at the Hidden Valley in Glencoe, before being touched indecently.

Court documents indicated this occurred sometime between June 1987 and June 1989.

As part of the sentencing, Sheriff Tim Niven-Smith ordered that the Fife Council’s chief social work officer would act as the guardian for Cameron over the next five years.

This appointment grants the guardian significant decision-making authority due to Cameron’s cognitive decline.

Furthermore, the guardian was empowered to ensure Cameron's adherence to sex offender register obligations for a period of five years.
