WILLIAM BRAZIL FROM HATFIELD SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO SHETLAND PONY ALFIE IN DONCASTER

In a disturbing case of animal cruelty, William Brazil, a resident of Hatfield, was found guilty in 2022 of causing unnecessary suffering to a Shetland pony named Alfie. The incident took place at his residence on Whitegates Caravan Site, Station Road, Dunscroft, near Hatfield, Doncaster DN7 4EG. The case drew significant attention from local animal welfare authorities after reports of neglect and suffering came to light.

Alfie, the pony at the center of this case, was discovered in a severely neglected state, suffering from a maggot-infested wound on his neck. The RSPCA inspector Tamsin Drysdale was dispatched to the scene following concerns raised by South Yorkshire Police in the spring of the previous year. Upon arriving at the site, Inspector Drysdale immediately noticed a strong, foul smell emanating from Alfie’s neck area, where a tether and head collar were attached.

Moving aside Alfie’s thick black mane, the inspector observed that the head collar and tether had become embedded deeply into the pony’s skin. The wounds were infested with maggots, which were visibly moving within the tissue. The severity of the embedding was such that the tether could not be removed on the spot, indicating an urgent need for veterinary intervention. William Brazil consented to transfer ownership of Alfie to the RSPCA, allowing the inspector to arrange for immediate medical treatment.

Within an hour, a local equine veterinarian arrived to examine Alfie. The vet’s assessment revealed that a nylon rope tied around Alfie’s neck had penetrated approximately 5 centimeters into the tissue, with the skin growing around the embedded rope. The wound was discharging, and the veterinarian observed numerous flies at various stages of development—ranging from maggots to fully grown insects—feeding on the infected tissue. These findings suggested that the wound had been left untreated for at least two weeks, allowing the infestation and infection to worsen.

Blood tests conducted on Alfie indicated chronic inflammation, raising concerns about his long-term health. The veterinarian emphasized that Alfie would require ongoing antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory treatments to survive, as untreated infections could escalate into life-threatening sepsis. The case underscored the neglect and suffering inflicted upon the pony, with inspectors noting that Alfie’s injuries must have been ignored for an extended period.

Following intensive veterinary care and treatment, Alfie made a full recovery from his neck injuries. He was subsequently adopted earlier this year and now resides in a loving forever home, free from the suffering he endured.

In sentencing, William Brazil received a penalty of 135 hours of unpaid work, along with costs and a surcharge totaling £595. Additionally, he was handed a ten-year ban on keeping any equines, a measure aimed at preventing future incidents of animal cruelty. Inspector Drysdale expressed her dismay at the case, emphasizing the importance of timely intervention and urging pet owners and animal carers to seek professional help if they are unable to care for their animals properly. She highlighted that neglect and prolonged suffering would not be tolerated by authorities, reinforcing the community’s commitment to animal welfare.
