WAYNE RUSSELL SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN DERBY
The Derby Crown Court has heard disturbing details about Wayne Russell, who was only a teenager at the time he committed multiple sexual offences. The court revealed that Russell, now aged 22 and residing in Alvaston, engaged in inappropriate and illegal acts involving young girls decades ago.
One of the victims, a girl under the age of 13, was subjected to inappropriate touching on four or five separate occasions.
During the trial, she described how Russell placed his hand inside her pyjamas and pants, an act she later disclosed had occurred over a period of years, though she initially kept it to herself.
Despite the initial silence from the first victim, she eventually found the courage to report the incidents to the police.
Her accusations led to a court case where Russell was found guilty of sexual assault on a child under 13.
Judge Nirmal Shant QC, addressing the court and the defendant, sentenced Russell to 27 months in prison.
The judge also emphasized the severity of the offences, stating: "On four occasions you put your hands in her (the younger victim's) pants and 'tickled her privates' as she said and demonstrated during the trial." In addition to the offences involving the first girl, Russell’s criminal record also includes an incident involving a second girl.
The court acknowledged that Russell engaged in consensual sexual activity with the second girl, with whom he had at least two sexual encounters, including one that took place in a field.
However, the judge made it clear that the law is there to protect young girls regardless of consent, underscoring the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
Prosecutor Stuart Lody outlined the timeline and specifics of the case, stating that the first victim was subjected to sexual touching by Russell when she was under 13 years old.
The offences reportedly occurred on multiple occasions, and it was only after she managed to summon the courage to report the matter that her ordeal came to light.
Lody explained that Russell initially denied the allegations, forcing the victim to relive her trauma during a trial where she had to recount detailed accounts of her abuse.
Regarding the second girl, Russell admitted to sexual activity, which was described by the prosecution as being closer in age to him, thereby less distasteful legally but still morally and ethically problematic.
The court took a stern view on these acts, emphasizing the need to protect young vulnerable girls from exploitation.
In his defense, Steven Taylor stated that Russell had attempted to commit suicide when the allegations first surfaced in 2019.
Taylor mentioned that Russell lacks formal qualifications and mainly works in manual jobs.
He added that his client would benefit from therapeutic intervention and is no longer in a suicidal state, indicating some progress since the incidents.
As part of his sentencing, Judge Shant imposed a sexual harm prevention order lasting ten years on Wayne Russell.
Additionally, Russell will be required to register as a sex offender for an equivalent period.
The court's judgment underscores the serious nature of the offences committed and the ongoing need for protection and monitoring of individuals involved in such crimes in Derby.
