MAN WHO ASSAULTED HIS EX-PARTNER HAS BEEN JAILED
In August 2024, Jamie Mewis was involved in an attack on a woman at a hotel in Derby.The incident occurred following a heated argument when she discovered messages to other women on his phone.
As she announced her intention to leave, Mewis reportedly grabbed her by the neck and pushed her onto the bed.
After releasing his hold, she collapsed against a wall and injured her head.
She then escaped to the hotel reception, where staff called the police.
Mewis fled the scene but was arrested three days later.
In her victim impact statement, the woman expressed that Jamie’s assault had profoundly affected her life.
She stated that she was suffering from physical and psychological trauma, including severe depression, borderline personality disorder, and PTSD.
She noted that her daily life was severely disrupted, avoiding leaving her home and refraining from social group activities.
She conveyed her wish for justice and hoped to find closure once Mewis was sentenced, emphasizing that no punishment could fully remedy her health issues.
Mewis faced charges of intentional strangulation and assault by beating.
Initially denying the allegations, he later accepted a plea deal, admitting to assault causing actual bodily harm.
Mewis, residing on Hill Crest Road in Derby, appeared before Derby Crown Court on 3 March, where he was sentenced to 21 months in prison.
Additionally, a 10-year restraining order was imposed, barring him from contacting the victim.
