READING EX-COUNCILLOR WARREN SWAINE AVOIDS JAIL AFTER BEING CAUGHT WITH CHILD INDECENT IMAGES AND BESTIALITY
In July 2017, Warren Swaine, a former councillor from Reading, faced serious criminal charges related to the possession of indecent images of children and extreme pornography, including acts of bestiality. The case drew significant attention due to Swaine's previous political career and the disturbing nature of the evidence uncovered.
Authorities executed a search warrant at Swaine's residence on Church Street, located near Reading town centre.
During the operation, officers seized various electronic devices, including a laptop, a tower computer, and other storage media.
The police investigation revealed that Swaine had been using these devices to store and access illicit material.
When questioned, Swaine claimed that one of the hard drives contained 'vintage pornography,' suggesting he attempted to justify or downplay his activities.
It was also noted that he had technical expertise, with a background in information technology, which was evident from the nature of the devices and the software used.
Police Constable Timothy Lloyd provided detailed descriptions of the evidence found.
He explained that a cache of approximately 30,000 images was discovered, with some files containing explicit words such as 'Lolita,' raising concerns about their content.
Among the images, there were 98 pictures depicting schoolgirls, some as young as 13 or 14, being abused by adult men.
One particularly disturbing image showed a young girl being raped by two men, which prosecutors highlighted as one of the worst examples of the material found.
In addition to the indecent images of children, police uncovered extreme pornographic content involving acts of bestiality.
The evidence was deemed highly disturbing and indicative of serious criminal behavior.
Swaine's previous notoriety was also noted; he had served as a councillor with Reading Borough Council but resigned in 2011 following a controversy involving racist remarks directed at a Labour MP.
At Reading Crown Court, Swaine appeared before the judge to face the charges.
He was convicted on two counts of making indecent photographs of children and one count of possessing extreme pornography.
The court sentenced him to a two-year community order, which requires him to complete a rehabilitation program.
Additionally, Swaine was ordered to pay £535 in court costs and will be registered as a sex offender for five years.
The judge emphasized the severity of the crimes, but opted for a community-based sentence rather than imprisonment, considering the circumstances and Swaine's background.
