CONVICTED DRUG DEALER AND ATTACKER OF WOMAN HANDED SUSPENDED SENTENCE
A woman sustained a detached retina following an assault by her former partner, Waqar Lal, at her residence.The court was informed that Lal, who has a criminal background as a drug dealer, attacked her during a disagreement inside her home.
She explained that Lal had been invited over and they were drinking vodka together when the dispute emerged.
The victim described how Lal accused her of being involved with someone else, then undressed himself and urinated on the floor, insulting her with a derogatory term.
Despite her pleas for him to leave, Lal continued to shout derogatory remarks and threatened violence, asking, 'shall I punch you?' before delivering three rapid punches to her face, targeting her eye.
She said she now feels traumatized by the incident and was very frightened due to Lal’s aggressive threats.
The assault occurred early on August 16, 2020, at her flat in Derby.
Lal departed the premises the next morning, and she subsequently needed surgery for her injured eye.
Lal admitted to charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage.
During his sentencing at Derby Crown Court, he received a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.
The judge described the attack as a brief but vicious series of three punches and emphasized the serious potential consequences of Lal’s actions.
Additionally, Lal was ordered to complete 150 hours of community service and participate in 30 days of rehabilitation programs.
The victim shared her feelings of trauma and fear, noting that Lal’s violence could have been directed at anyone, including close family and friends.
