MANCHESTER TUTOR SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF FIVE GIRLS
A private tutor who sexually assaulted five children has been sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Umair Iqbal, aged 38, was convicted by a jury of 29 out of 30 counts of sexual assault after a four-week trial.
The Manchester Crown Court heard that Iqbal abused his victims, ranging in age from eight to 18, over a period of ten years while tutoring them in mathematics and the Koran.
He frequently visited the homes of young women and girls for scheduled lessons in Manchester and Middleton.
Following his sentencing, Det Con Alex Dodd from Greater Manchester Police stated: "All five victims were young Muslim girls from good families, abused by a person in a position of trust and silenced through fear of getting in trouble or being blamed for the abuse." Iqbal from Limeside Road, Oldham, is also required to serve three years on license post-release and is under an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, as well as restraining orders safeguarding his victims and their families.
The crime was uncovered after police inquiries began in October 2020 when a 15-year-old victim came forward, believing she had been at fault for the abuse.
Further investigations identified four additional victims, including one girl abused starting at age eight.
Det Con Dodd added: "Iqbal befriended families and exploited his good reputation within the community to hide his sordid sexual agenda."
