TREVER BOLTON FROM CLACTON-ON-SEA SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENCES AT CARMEL COLLEGE IN OXFORDSHIRE

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community, Trevor Bolton, a 78-year-old former housemaster from Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, has been sentenced to 19 years in prison for a series of serious sexual offences committed against boys at the renowned Carmel College in Oxfordshire. The conviction follows a lengthy investigation into allegations that Bolton targeted young male students over a span of more than two decades, exploiting his position of authority at the prestigious boarding school.

Bolton was found guilty of a total of 16 counts of indecent assault, six counts of indecency with a child, and three additional sexual offences. The court's decision was met with approval from law enforcement officials and one of the victims, who expressed a sense of relief and vindication after the sentencing. Peter, a 56-year-old man from London, was among the two victims who chose to waive their anonymity to speak publicly about their experiences. He stated, “I’m stunned but glad. I feel even more vindicated,” reflecting the emotional toll of the case and the importance of justice being served.

Carmel College, established in 1948 and closed in 1997, was once considered one of the most prestigious Jewish boarding schools in the United Kingdom. Originally located at Greenham Common in Berkshire, the school relocated to Mongewell Park in 1952. Throughout its operational years, the institution educated approximately 4,000 students, with about one-third of them coming from overseas. The school was often referred to as “the Jewish Eton,” a nickname that underscored its reputation for academic excellence and exclusivity.

The allegations against Bolton emerged during the trial, revealing that he had used his position to groom and sexually abuse multiple boys. The jury, composed of seven women and five men, unanimously convicted him of 21 sexual offences committed during his tenure at Carmel College. The offences included acts of indecency and assault against boys under the age of 16. In a subsequent verdict, the jury returned guilty findings on three counts of serious sexual assault and one indecent assault by an 11 to 1 majority.

Oxford Crown Court heard that Bolton, who now resides at Kestrel Way in Clacton-on-Sea, would invite select groups of boys to his private flat on the school campus. It was there that he committed various indecent acts, exploiting his authority and trust to carry out his crimes. The victims, all male, were under 16 at the time of the offences, highlighting the severity and predatory nature of Bolton’s actions.

Bolton is scheduled to be sentenced the following afternoon, with the court expected to impose a significant custodial term in light of the gravity of his offences. The case has brought to light disturbing truths about abuse within prestigious educational institutions and has prompted ongoing discussions about safeguarding and accountability in such environments.
