TRAHERNE WILLIAMS SHAKES BABY IN BROXBURN AND CAUSES FATAL INJURIES
In May 2016, a tragic incident unfolded in Broxburn, West Lothian, involving a young father named Traherne Williams, who was responsible for the death of his three-month-old daughter, Sophia. The events took a devastating turn when Williams, overwhelmed by frustration, violently shook the infant and forcefully threw her onto a sofa while she was crying, an act that would have catastrophic consequences.According to reports, the incident occurred on May 30, 2016, during a moment when the baby was distressed and refusing to take her feed. Witnesses and medical professionals described how Williams, in a state of apparent frustration, lost control and committed the violent act. Paramedics responded swiftly to the scene, attending to the injured baby and transporting her to St John’s Hospital. Despite the medical team's efforts, Sophia suffered severe brain injuries as a result of the assault, injuries that proved fatal. She passed away a few days later, on June 5, 2016.
During the subsequent investigation, Williams initially attempted to conceal the true cause of the injuries. He falsely claimed to a doctor that Sophia had fallen at a family centre where they had been staying, attempting to cover up the violent incident. However, evidence and medical examinations revealed the brutal nature of the assault, leading to charges against him.
At the High Court in Glasgow, Williams, then aged 23, pleaded guilty to culpable homicide on May 4. His plea was accepted, and he was subsequently sentenced to six years and six months in prison during a hearing held on a Tuesday. The court heard how Williams had become “absolutely frustrated” with his daughter’s crying and, in a moment of rage, threw her onto the sofa, an act that resulted in her tragic death.
During the sentencing, Lord Matthews, the presiding judge, addressed Williams directly, emphasizing the grave responsibilities of parenthood. He stated, “Parenthood is an enormous privilege but it carries with it enormous responsibilities of nurturing, care and protection. As a child grows older the nature of the responsibilities will change but any sane person who is old enough to be a parent knows that a babe in arms is a delicate creature who requires to be handled with the greatest of care and patience.”
The judge further remarked that instead of showing the necessary care and patience, Williams’s frustration led him to commit a violent act that set off a chain of events culminating in Sophia’s death. The court also noted that Williams smiled at his 20-year-old partner, Shannon Main, as he was handcuffed and taken to the cells. Initially, the pair faced a murder charge, but Williams ultimately admitted to the reduced charge of culpable homicide, while Main’s plea of not guilty was accepted. It was also revealed that Main continues to stand by Williams despite the tragic outcome.
This case highlights the devastating consequences of parental frustration and the importance of understanding the responsibilities that come with caring for a vulnerable infant. The tragic loss of Sophia has left her family and the community in mourning, serving as a stark reminder of the need for patience, care, and proper support for parents in distress.
