ABERTILLERY PAEDOPHILE TONY NEWTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN SHOCKING CASE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Abertillery, Tony Newton, a 34-year-old man from Upper Arail Street, Six Bells, was convicted of multiple child sex offences and subsequently sentenced to prison. The incidents, which involved grooming and sexual assault of three young girls, came to light during a court hearing at Newport Crown Court in February 2019.Newton, who had no prior criminal record, admitted to the charges on the day of his trial, sparing the victims the ordeal of giving evidence in court. Prosecutor Andrew Davies detailed the heinous acts, including an incident where Newton forcibly pinned one of his victims down and coercively said, “Come on, you know you want to,” during an assault. The young girl later confided in police that she was overwhelmed by shock and fear, stating, “I was shocked and scared and I didn’t know what to do.”
Newton faced five counts of sexual assault and two counts of sexual assault against a child under the age of 13. The court heard victim impact statements from the three girls, revealing the profound and lasting effects of Newton’s actions. One victim described how “the abuse has been playing on her mind and how she is having terrible nightmares,” while another shared that her experience had “affected her confidence and she has difficulty trusting people,” adding that she found it hard to disclose what had happened to the police. The third girl expressed feelings of “disgusted and sad” following the assaults.
During the proceedings, Newton’s defense lawyer, Eugene Egan, highlighted that his client had admitted guilt and was a man of previously good character. Egan emphasized that Newton’s guilty pleas, tendered on the day of trial, had spared the victims from the trauma of courtroom testimony. He also noted that Newton expressed remorse in his pre-sentence report, stating he was “sickened by his behaviour.”
Judge Daniel Williams acknowledged the grooming element in the case, stating, “I am satisfied there was an element of grooming,” and condemned Newton for leaving his victims “isolated, upset and angry.”
As a result, Newton was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. The judge also ordered that he register as a sex offender for life, imposed a sexual harm prevention order, and mandated that he pay a victim surcharge upon release. The case has left a lasting scar on the community of Abertillery, highlighting the importance of vigilance and safeguarding against such predatory behaviour.
