ABERTILLERY PAEDOPHILE STEVEN BRESLIN-GREEN CAUGHT WITH CHILD IMAGES IN NEWPORT
In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community, Steven Breslin-Green, a man from Abertillery, has been found in possession of nearly 200 indecent images of children. It has emerged that Breslin-Green was not only a registered foster carer but also worked in various settings involving children and young people within the city of Newport.Details of the case reveal that Breslin-Green, aged 40, was warned earlier this month that he could face a prison sentence after admitting to possessing a significant number of child abuse images on his personal laptop. The images, which are classified into different categories based on severity, include 40 images of the most serious kind, known as Category A, along with 64 images in Category B and 91 in Category C. These offences took place between April 22 and May 21 of the previous year, as confirmed during proceedings at Cardiff Crown Court.
Following the discovery, Newport City Council clarified that Breslin-Green has not been employed by the authority in any capacity since the allegations surfaced last year. Although he was involved in various roles working with children and young people in the city, the council emphasized that he was never directly employed by them. Instead, he worked in settings that required supervision, and at all times, he would have been under the watchful eye of responsible adults. The council also confirmed that Breslin-Green was approved as a local authority foster carer in the summer of 2023 after passing rigorous background checks. However, this approval was revoked in the summer of 2024 once the allegations came to light.
Importantly, the council reassured the public that none of Breslin-Green’s offences relate to any children he cared for or any local children. The charges pertain solely to the downloading and possession of illegal images, which are a serious crime regardless of the victim’s location. The authority expressed its concern over the nature of these crimes, acknowledging that the children depicted in such images are innocent victims, and emphasized that such behavior cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.
While the legal proceedings were ongoing, the council, along with Breslin-Green’s employers and the various settings where he worked, were restricted from making public statements or discussing the case. Nevertheless, they assured that any direct inquiries from the public have been addressed and that support services have been made available to those affected.
During the court hearing, Breslin-Green pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. The court was informed that he possessed images across all three categories, with the most severe being Category A. His offences were committed over a month-long period in 2022. As part of the legal process, Breslin-Green will be required to register as a sex offender, a move that underscores the gravity of his crimes.
At the hearing, his legal representative, Gareth Williams, highlighted that Breslin-Green is a man of previously good character with no prior convictions. He requested that a pre-sentence report be prepared to assist the court in determining an appropriate sentence. Judge Hywel James acknowledged the case’s seriousness and indicated that all sentencing options, including custody, remain on the table. The judge also noted the absence of previous convictions and agreed that a pre-sentence report was necessary to better understand Breslin-Green’s background.
The sentencing hearing has been scheduled for March 6, and Breslin-Green has been granted conditional bail until then, pending the court’s final decision.
