WITHERNSEA MAN MURDERED FIANCÉ DAYS AFTER THEIR ENGAGEMENT
A man involved in a violent incident that resulted in the stabbing of his fiancée in the neck shortly after their engagement has been convicted of her murder.Tony Jobling, aged 51, denied having killed Samantha Petra Atkinson, known as Petra, during an intoxicated argument in September of the previous year.
After a trial lasting two days, a jury composed of six men and six women reached a verdict of guilty for murder in just two and a half hours of deliberation at Sheffield Crown Court.
Ms.
Atkinson, who was 42, sustained 12 injuries caused by a sharp object at her residence in Withernsea, including three to her neck.
One injury severed her jugular vein, resulting in her blood loss and death, as her 16-year-old son, Harry, slept upstairs.
Jobling had acknowledged that Ms.
Atkinson died at his hands but argued her injuries were accidental, claiming he was attempting to disarm her after she grabbed a knife during an argument.
The jury was instructed to consider manslaughter as a lesser charge if they did not find him guilty of murder.
Nonetheless, following the guilty verdict, Jobling was sentenced to at least 20 years in prison.
