JASON APPLEBY FROM WITHERNSEA SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO PUPPY IN HORRIFIC ATTACK
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community of Withernsea, Jason Appleby, born on July 12, 1975, was found guilty of inflicting severe cruelty upon a young dog. The incident, which took place at his residence on 36 Kirkfield Road, involved the brutal beating of a six-month-old Dogue de Bordeaux puppy named Bonnie.Footage captured by a concerned neighbor vividly shows Appleby repeatedly striking and jabbing Bonnie with a piece of wood. Despite the puppy’s desperate attempts to escape, Appleby continued his assault, forcing her into a child's playhouse. In a further act of violence, he kicked the playhouse into the air, demonstrating a blatant disregard for the animal’s suffering.
The court proceedings revealed that after his arrest, Appleby responded to RSPCA officers with what was described as 'sarcastic' remarks. During questioning, he shockingly stated, “I should have killed [Bonnie] with a hammer,” revealing a disturbing attitude towards the animal’s welfare. Appleby claimed that his actions were meant to scare Bonnie away after she tore up a dirty nappy in his kitchen, asserting that he was hitting the ground and fence to frighten her.
Despite the severity of the incident, Bonnie sustained only minor injuries. She was subsequently taken into foster care and later adopted by Terry Morrill. Mr. Morrill, speaking about Bonnie’s condition, expressed his concern and relief, saying, “I have never known a dog so nervous in all my life as she was when I first got her. It was heartbreaking to see. If anybody came too close to her, or you tried to put a lead on her, she would be trying to get away. She would be petrified. She is so much better now, which is good to see. You couldn’t ask for a better dog, she is lovely.”
In a move that drew widespread condemnation, Appleby ultimately pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to Bonnie on the day of his trial. His sentence included a four-month jail term and a lifetime ban on owning or keeping any animals, serving as a stark reminder of the consequences of animal cruelty in the area.
