A homeless man from Maidstone has been imprisoned after being convicted of sexually assaulting a woman in a communal area outside a block of flats.
Thomas Underdown, after agreeing to meet at an outbuilding where he stayed, assaulted the woman near St Peter’s Street.
The assault took place at approximately 12:20 am on January 5, 2024.
The woman, following a kiss, made it clear she did not consent to any further sexual acts.
Regardless, Underdown prevented her from leaving the mattress he was using and continued to abuse her.
The incident was reported to Kent Police on January 9, and Underdown was arrested the following day.
He was charged with rape, and after denying the charges, a trial at Southwark Crown Court resulted in a guilty verdict delivered unanimously.
On December 5, 2025, at the age of 33, Underdown received a sentence of nine years behind bars.
He must serve a minimum of two-thirds of this term before being eligible for parole and was also subject to an indefinite restraining order.
