THOMAS BOLTON AND MATHEW STUBBS FROM TUNSTALL AND STOKE-ON-TRENT CONVICTED OF CRUELTY TO DOGS IN BRADFORD

Thomas Bolton, born around 1995, and Mathew Stubbs, born approximately in 1999, both residents of Broomhill Street in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, have been found guilty of neglect and the violent mistreatment of three Staffordshire Bull Terriers while they were living in Bradford. The case highlights serious concerns about animal cruelty and the neglectful conditions under which the dogs, named Teig, Bobo, and Tyson, were kept.

According to court records, Thomas Bolton was identified as the owner of the dogs, with Mathew Stubbs sharing responsibility for their care. The investigation into their treatment was initiated after a series of visits and reports that documented the dogs’ living conditions and the abuse they endured. The first inspection took place on October 11, 2018, at a property on Rand Street, Shearbridge, Bradford. During this visit, an RSPCA inspector observed two dogs inside the house. One, Teig, was confined to the cellar, while the other had free access to the rest of the residence.

The inspector noted that Teig appeared excited at the prospect of attention but also detected a strong smell of ammonia and piles of fecal matter, indicating poor hygiene and neglect. An Animal Welfare Assessment form was issued, and the inspector advised the defendants that Teig should either be integrated with the other dog or be signed over to someone who could provide proper care. At this stage, the inspector was not aware of the existence of a third dog.

Further investigations revealed that the dogs had suffered both physical and psychological abuse, with Mathew Stubbs described as a “disciplinarian” who was responsible for their mistreatment. A subsequent visit occurred about a week later, but the situation escalated on January 24, 2019, when a new report highlighted the deteriorating conditions of the animals.

During this visit, a veterinary surgeon provided a certificate indicating that the three dogs were at risk of suffering if their circumstances did not improve. Tensions rose between Bolton and Stubbs, leading to the removal of the dogs for assessment. The veterinary examination revealed that the dogs had long claws and soft paws, signs of infrequent walks and neglect. Tyson, in particular, was observed to flinch when touched, displaying signs of extreme fear and anxiety, especially around loud noises and unfamiliar people.

Further testimony from a former partner of Bolton, who had lived with him on Rand Street from September to December 2018, painted a disturbing picture of how the dogs were kept and treated. She described Stubbs as the primary disciplinarian, recounting incidents where he would physically grab Tyson by the face, lift him off the ground, scream at him, and throw him onto a bed. These accounts underscored the severity of the abuse inflicted upon the animals.

Animal behaviourists also provided evidence, emphasizing Tyson’s extreme anxiety and fearfulness, which were consistent with the physical and emotional abuse he endured. The court heard that the dogs’ conditions and treatment were in clear violation of animal welfare standards.

In sentencing, the court imposed strict penalties. Mathew Stubbs was sentenced to ten weeks in jail, suspended for 24 months, and ordered to pay costs of £260. Additionally, he received a ten-year ban on owning or being responsible for any animals. Thomas Bolton was given a 12-month community order, including a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, and was also ordered to pay £260 in costs. Furthermore, Bolton was indefinitely disqualified from owning or being responsible for any animals, reflecting the court’s recognition of the severity of his actions.

This case underscores the importance of animal welfare laws and the ongoing efforts of authorities to combat cruelty and neglect in all communities, including those in Tunstall and Stoke-on-Trent.
