PORTSMOUTH ASYLUM SEEKER JAILED FOR ATTEMPTED RAPE NEAR WAR MEMORIAL
May 2023: A Deliveroo courier named Tesfagabriel Gebrzgabhi has received a prison sentence of six years and four months following an attempted sexual assault near a World War I memorial in Portsmouth. The court was informed that Gebrzgabhi, 34 years old and an asylum seeker, targeted a woman in her twenties who was walking alone after a night out.
He forcibly pressed her against a wall and tried to assault her by pulling up her skirt.
Despite being intoxicated, the woman managed to fend him off and attempted to record the incident.
Evidence showed semen on her clothes, and Gebrzgabhi was detained a week later when police recognized him riding his distinctive neon green bicycle with a Deliveroo badge.
The court noted that the crime was 'almost' a rape and acknowledged that the victim suffered significant psychological trauma.
The judge also ordered Gebrzgabhi’s deportation, as he was not legally residing in the UK.
He pleaded guilty to one count of attempted rape.
His lawyer described him as 'deeply ashamed' and noted he had come to the UK by boat seeking better opportunities.
Officers praised the victim for her courage and expressed hope that the sentence would aid her recovery from the distress caused by the attack.
