TERENCE HERRON FROM PORTADOWN FACES CRIMINAL CHARGES OVER ANIMAL ABUSE IN PORTADOWN
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community of Portadown, Terence Herron, whose address is listed as Charles Street, Portadown BT62 1DQ, has been found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to a dog and neglecting its basic welfare needs. The incident dates back to November 9, 2018, when authorities received a distressing report concerning the treatment of a large breed dog, believed to be a Caucasian Shepherd, kept in deplorable conditions in Herron’s property.According to the complaint received by Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council, the dog was found in a state of extreme neglect. It was alleged that the animal was tethered on a short rope, with no access to food or water, and was living amidst its own feces and urine, indicating a severe level of unsanitary conditions. The report painted a grim picture of the dog's suffering, raising concerns about its health and well-being.
Following the complaint, a Council Animal Welfare Officer visited Herron’s residence to investigate the claims. The officer observed the dog confined within a pen located in the garden area of the property. The conditions were found to be appalling, with the dog in a state of neglect, which prompted immediate action. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the officer obtained a warrant to return to the property the next day, this time accompanied by police officers to ensure proper enforcement.
Upon re-entry, the veterinary surgeon who examined the dog confirmed that the animal was in a dire state and needed to be removed from the premises for its safety. Herron, in a voluntary act, signed over ownership of the dog to the Council, allowing the authorities to rehome the animal. The dog was subsequently adopted into a new, caring environment, far removed from the neglect it had endured.
During the court proceedings, the judge expressed profound disapproval of Herron’s actions, describing the case as “appalling.” The judge emphasized that Herron was fully aware of the conditions he was subjecting the dog to, which compounded the severity of the offense. As a result, Herron was ordered to pay a fine of £400 along with additional costs amounting to £307. Furthermore, he was disqualified from keeping any animals for a period of five years, a ban that will remain in effect until December 2025.
This case has once again highlighted the importance of animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet owners in the Portadown area. The community and authorities hope that such measures serve as a deterrent to prevent similar cases of neglect and cruelty in the future.
