OLDHAM SEX OFFENDER CAUGHT IN ONLINE STING GETS COMMUNITY ORDER

An Oldham sex offender was snared by a member of a paedophile hunter group pretending to be a teenage girl online, a court has heard.Tahir Munir, of Ridley Street, Oldham appeared at Minshull Street Crown Court today (March 30) for sentence after being charged with engaging in sexual communication with a child and attempting to arrange or facilitate the commission of a child sex offence.The court heard how in 2018 the 42-year-old had been communicating with someone via a messaging forum who he believed to be a 14-year-old girl but was in fact a 28-year-old woman who was a member of a paedophile hunter group.Prosecutor Simon Barratt said that the woman who he described as a “decoy” made it clear in the messages that she was only 14 years old.The conversation moved to WhatsApp and again the decoy stressed she was 14 and asked Munir if he was “content” to keep speaking which he said he was.Munir arranged to meet the girl at a shopping centre in Manchester city centre and ahead of the planned meeting made reference to “booking a hotel” and “buying condoms”.The court was told that Munir did not attend, saying he was “stuck in traffic” but that the conversation between him and the girl continued and became “sexual”.He later sent the girl a friend request on Facebook but shortly afterwards the conversation ended, and he deleted her.Munir pleaded guilty to attempting to communicate with a child but denied that he booked a hotel.In mitigation defence barrister Kevin Liston said Munir was of previous “good character” and had no previous convictions.Passing sentence Judge Bernadette Baxter said Munir had “no doubt considered his behaviour” since the offences occurred five years ago and acknowledged that he was going through a “marital break down” at the time of the offences.Judge Baxter also however noted that Munir tried to argue that he was not messaging the girl for sexual gratification which she said was “nonsense” as he knew the girl was 14 years old, the conversation was sexual, and plans were made to meet up.Addressing Munir she said he was “clearly doing it for sexual gratification and to say otherwise was delusional”.She handed Munir a two-year community order to “deal with his demons” and ordered him to partake in 150 hours of unpaid work and the Horizon programme which she called “a programme for child sex offenders” telling Munir “that’s you”.Munir was also handed a five-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO), placed on the sex offender’s register for five years, and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £85.
