STUART KERNER'S SHOCKING CRIME IN BEXLEYHEATH: TEACHER'S SEX OFFENSES LEAVE COMMUNITY IN OUTRAGE

In January 2015, a disturbing case emerged involving Stuart Kerner, a teacher from Bexleyheath, whose criminal actions have sparked widespread condemnation and concern within the local community and beyond.

Kerner, aged 44 and residing in Kent, was sentenced to an 18-month suspended prison term after being convicted of engaging in sexual activities with a minor. The court found that he had committed two counts of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust, a serious offense that highlights the grave breach of professional and moral boundaries.

The court proceedings revealed harrowing details of the misconduct. It was established that Kerner, a religious studies teacher, took advantage of a female pupil, then only 16 years old, in a manner that was both predatory and deeply inappropriate. One particularly distressing incident involved Kerner taking the girl’s virginity in a school store cupboard, an act that occurred during a week when his personal life was also marked by tragedy, as his wife was experiencing a miscarriage of their second child.

Following this, Kerner drove the girl to his home, where further sexual activity took place, along with kissing and cuddling, indicating a pattern of grooming and manipulation. The court heard that what began as a schoolgirl crush evolved into an 18-month-long affair, which was uncovered in 2013. Jurors found Kerner guilty of two counts of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust, but acquitted him of four other similar charges and two additional counts related to alleged behavior when the victim was only 15.

During the sentencing hearing at Inner London Crown Court, Judge Joanna Greenberg QC described the victim as being 'obsessed' with Kerner, and noted that her friends had observed her 'stalking' him. The judge remarked that, in a disturbing twist, it was the girl who appeared to have groomed Kerner, with the teacher succumbing to temptation. She also acknowledged Kerner’s emotional fragility, citing his struggles with his wife’s pregnancy complications, which, while not excusing his actions, provided some context for his behavior.

Legal and educational experts have expressed concern over the adequacy of the sentence. Dame Joan McVittie, a prominent secondary school head teacher, emphasized that teachers are bound by strict guidelines requiring them to report any inappropriate conduct to senior management. Such protocols are designed to protect students and prevent abuse, and critics argue that Kerner’s failure to follow these procedures contributed to the breach of trust.

Kerner was placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and prohibited from working with children, measures that aim to safeguard the community. However, the sentence itself—an 18-month suspended term—has been met with criticism. Marilyn Hawes, founder of the charity Enough Abuse UK, condemned the sentence as unduly lenient, stressing that the victim and her family had a right to feel secure in the school environment, which was compromised by Kerner’s betrayal of trust.

Jon Brown, representing the NSPCC, also voiced strong disapproval, highlighting the severity of Kerner’s breach of trust and the potential long-term damage inflicted on the young girl involved. He emphasized that teachers have a duty of care to their pupils and should have taken steps to distance themselves from the victim rather than encouraging or allowing the inappropriate relationship to develop.

Overall, the case has ignited discussions about the adequacy of sentencing schemes and the importance of safeguarding measures within educational institutions, especially in communities like Bexleyheath where trust and safety are paramount.
